Günter Grass (1962) ‘The Tin Drum‘, US first edition, first printing, published by Pantheon Books, division of Random House. Signed and inscribed “Für Elias Kanner! Güner Grass”. Correct red cloth binding with Oskar Matzerath with his tin drum printed at the bottom.
Provenance: obtained at a professional auction in New York in 2018 along other Nobel Prize winning title which have been signed for the same recipient (Elias Kanner)
Condition: the book is in near fine condition with slight shelf wear and usual ageing to the edges. The dust jacket is in good condition, not price clipped, with some chipping and edge wear as shown.
‘The Tin Drum’ belongs to Germany’s post WWII literary canon and is the author’s best known book in Germany where it is being read in schools. It is the author’s first book of the so-called Danzig trilogy and was adapted as a film in 1979 winning the Palm’Or and Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Grass won the Nobel Prize in 1999 and the Danzig trilogy contributed the most towards the prize.
