Lewis, C.S. (1950) ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’, UK first edition

Clive Staples Lewis (1950) ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe‘, UK first edition, first printing, published by Geoffrey Bles.

Condition: a very good copy all around. The book’s boards are just a touch faded on the spine and where ths dust jacket had a few chips at the edges. Very often the boards go completely grey, but this specimen has nicely retained most of its original green colour. Slight rubbing to bottom edge from sliding in and out of a shelf. Contemporary previous owner’s name and indication from whom it was a gift on the ffep. Slight foxing on ffep and title page. Thereafter very clean whith no scribbles, colouring etc. as often seen in other specimen of this classic children book. The first state dust jacket now presents in near fine condition having benefited from slight professional restoration. The book’s boards reveal the extent of the restoration which is not a lot. The slight minor chips to the head and foot of the spine and top panel’s edge have been refilled. The dust jacket is NOT price clipped showing the correct 8s.6d. net price as called for. The reverse side displays the typical discolouration/ ageing of the dust jacket. Overall a very good copy.

The first book in the seminal Chronicles of Narnia series which has become a classic of children literature. A very rare book and as coveted as JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings since it is held in similar esteem.
