Rand, Ayn (1957) ‘Atlas Shrugged’, US first edition

Ayn Rand (1957) ‘Atlas Shrugged‘, US first edition, first printing, published by Random House. Housed in a protective solander box bearing a design on the front which mimicks the dust jacket art.

Condition: a fine copy in a near fine dust jacket. The book bears no inscriptions, no bookplates and no stamps; internally clean. The dark blue top stain is unfaded, and the blue-green boards are also clean and unfaded. There is no lean and the book feels unread. The first state dust jacket with the correct price of USD 6.95, and 10/57 on bottom corner as called for. NO fading, with slight rubbing to the edges as pictured. There is one small tear to the bottom front fold as shown. It has NOT been restored in any way. A beautiful copy in like dust jacket hard to find in better condition.

Atlas Shrugged is considered to be Rand’s magnum opus. Her fourth novel develops ‘objectivism’ to its fullest advocating capitalism, individualism and reason. Part philosophical, part romance, part science fiction. Revered and loathed at the same time depending on right-left political spectrum it is undoubtedly a landmark book. Testimony to this are the sales figures with around half a million copies sold annually.
