There are a few vital fundamentals in valuations. These include scarcity, the demand for works by each author, the condition of a book, whether it is a first edition, and if so whether it is signed. Other factors include the condition of the book including any fading through sun exposure or foxing from damp conditions. The condition of the dust jacket is often critical, and values can change if anybody has written in the book – especially the author.
Valuing a single book can be complex, and so valuing a complete collection can be difficult. Different valuers could give a wide range of estimates. We have years of experience dealing with rare books and have often been asked to carry out valuations for insurance purposes. For any book or collection of significance we need to attend in purpose to physically examine the books. We can also carry out probate valuations. In this case we appreciate that it is a difficult time for relatives and so carry out the valuation sensitively.
We charge a competitive fee for valuations which is negotiable depending on the size and location of the collection. This fee can be offset against any proceeds from sales of books should you decide, following a valuation, to sell books to us or instruct us to sell them on your behalf.
