James Ellroy (1990) ‘L.A. Confidential’, US first edition, first printing, published by The Mysterious Press. Signed and inscribed by Ellroy: ‘To: Art Cooper – I hope this book scorches you soon! [signature]’. Art Cooper (1937-2003) was editor of GQ Magazine (1983-2003) and broadened the scope of the magazine making GQ one of the first gentlemen’s lifestyle magazine. He was famed for nurturing writers and in 1994 James Ellroy published the essay ‘My Mother’s Killer’ for GQ in which Ellroy gives an account how and why he opened the case file of his mother’s unsolved murder:

Ellroy and Cooper subsequently became friends and the original picture shows Ellroy and Cooper together.

‘L.A. Confidential’ is the third book in the ‘L.A. Quartet’. In 1997 it was adapted as a film starring Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, James Cromwell, Danny DeVito and Kim Basinger directed by Curtis Hanson. The movie won two Academy Awards (Kim Basinger as supporting role) and screenplay for Curtis Hanson and Brian Helgeland. Frequently listed as one of the best movies ever made conveying a truthful atmosphere of L.A. in the early 50s.
