Herbert, Frank (1966-1976) ‘Dune’; ‘Dune Messiah’; ‘Children of Dune’, all first editions of the original Dune trilogy
Frank Herbert (1966-1976) ‘Dune‘ trilogy, all three first editions, first printings. The set is comprised of:
- ‘Dune‘ (1966), published by Gollancz in the UK. Very good condition with nice boards without any bumps. Spine ends straight and not pushed. A neat previous owner’s name written on the front paste down in almost calligraphic hand. This is not visible behind the dust jacket’s front flap, but is mentioned here for accuracy. Internally clean without any previous owners’ scribbles. The page block is toned as a result of port quality paper used. However, the camera accentuates the toning especially compared to the two other volumes. The dust jacket is correctly priced at 30/- net. It has minor chipping to the edges as shown. The laminate has started to ‘bubble’ which is also quite common with this title. At the reverse top edge there is fortification tape.
- ‘Dune Messiah’, published by Putnam in the US. A fine book in a near fine dust jacket. No evidence that the book has been read. Tight binding with sharp corners.Only trifle of rubbing from sliding in and out of shelf only noticeable to the trained eye. Page block white like snow. No previous owners’ scribbles of any sorts. Correctly priced dust jacket at $4.95 and 6910 code at bottom flap. A little rubbing edge wear and one tear that reaches the ‘A’ in Frank at the top edge.
- ‘Children of Dune’, published by Berkley Publishing Corporation in the US. A near fine book in a fine dust jacket. Book is unread with clean boards. The lower corners are slightly bumped. Page block white like snow. No previous owners’ scribbles of any sorts. The dust jacket has no wear whatsoever and is correctly priced at $8.95 with 7604 code at the bottom flap.
‘Dune’ is by far the best science fiction book ever published. It won the Hugo Award and the inaugural Nebula Award. It breaks with every rule of how a novel ought to be written and it takes the reader over 100 pages to start understanding what is going on. A film adaptation in the 80s directed by visionary filmmaker David Lynch was unfortunately badly cut. A new version directed by Denis Villeneuve is on its way which will popularise the books with the new generation of readers. The books will always hold their value.
