Anthony Burgess (1962) ‘A Clockwork Orange’, UK first edition, first printing, first state, published by William Heinemann. This is a rare first state first edition in black boards and the first state dust jacket with wider flaps.
Condition: a near fine book in a very good plus dust jacket. The book has only the slightest of shelf wear. No bumps, no foxing, no ghost marks on the endpapers or pastedowns, clean throughout. Slight toning to page block edges commensurate with age. There is a very small and faint publisher’s ‘May 1962′ date stamp in the corner of the ffep. No other previous owners’ scribbles, no names, no bookplates. The dust jacket is unusually well preserved. It is the first state wrapper with wider flaps and it is correctly priced at 16s. There is one small chip to the top fold, one close tear to the bottom fold. A nice example and at least very good if not better.
‘A Clockwork Orange’ is the undoubted masterpiece by Anthony Burgess. Voted several times as one of the best and most influential novels of the 20th century, ‘Clockwork’ also made it onto the prestigious 2005 TIME magazine 100 best English-languange novels since 1923 list. Adapted several times, including by Andy Warhol in 1965 titled ‘Vinyl’, and most famously by Stanley Kubrick in 1971. A landmark novel which will hold its value.
