Burroughs, Edgar Rice (1927) ‘The War Chief’, US signed and inscribed association first edition
Edgar Rice Burroughs (1927) ‘The War Chief’, first edition, first print, published by McClurg. In publisher’s dust jacket by Paul Stahr. Association copy, warmly inscribed by Burroughs in the year of publication to his brother, Coleman, on the front free endpaper: “Dear Coleman- If real estate is moving as slowly along the North Shore as it is in Tarzana you will have plenty of time to read this latest from the Underwood of your affectionate brother Ed To F. Coleman Burroughs 10/4/27”.
Provenance: From the Edgar Rice Burroughs Collection of Roy and Dela White.
Condition: The book square and tight, cloth spine a bit toned and creased with some mild edgewear. Some rubbing and minor soiling to boards. The dust jacket has some wear, thumbsoiling, tape repairs and reinforcements to verso, some of which are partially visible on the front of the jacket. In spite of that the front panel remains bright and colorful as rarely seen for this difficult dust jacket. A very good copy in a good dustjacket.
A superb inscription and association of a legendary and prolific writer who gave us Tarzan and a plethora of landmark sci-fi stories such as John Carter of Mars. ‘The War Chief’ was the first book in the two novel strong Apache series, followed by ‘Apache Devil’.
