Burroughs, Edgar Rice (1932) ‘Tarzan Triumphant’, US signed and inscribed first edition family association copy, plus dust jacket proofs

Edgar Rice Burroughs (1932) ‘Tarzan Triumphant’, US first edition, first printing, published by Burroughs Inc. Association copy, humorously inscribed on the day of publication by Burroughs in black fountain pen to his daughter; the son-in law and actor James Pierce who played Tarzan in Tarzan and the Golden Lion; and to his grand-daughter on the front free endpaper: To / Joan, Jim, and Joan II / with love. On the / day of publication and / the birthday of / Old Septicemia / September 1, 1932 / Malibu La Costa“. Together with the jacket proofs (see below)

Condition: The book with a touch of leaning, spine toned and rubbed with lightly pushed tips, mild edge wear to boards, one corner bumped, red top edge tired, two small spots to foreedge and faint traces of dump on the bottom text block edge. Internally, the book is a beauty, with pages unmarked and unusually white. Very good. The original first issue dust jacket is in fine condition.

Another copy inscribed to ERB’s son Jack, which forms part of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Memorial Collection (A Catalog, by George T. McWhorter, p.160) and reproduced by Zeuschner (ERB The Bibliography, 2016, p.493) is dated “Malibu La Costa September 1, 1932”. This suggests that our copy is part of a small flock received from the publisher for presentation and so one of the first to be inscribed.

The dust jacket proofs: Five-layer selection of colour-plate proofs of the first edition dust jacket by Studley O. Burroughs, each containing a primary color in addition to the full-color representation. The individual plates are stapled into a brown-paper folio. Complete with the original mailer. Dimensions, 10″ x 8″. A few faint creases and damp stains, easily very good.
