Burroughs, Edgar Rice (1933) ‘Tarzan and the City of Gold’, US signed and inscribed association first edition

Edgar Rice Burroughs (1933) ‘Tarzan and the City of Gold’, US first edition, first printing, published by Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc. Signed and inscribed by the author to his son Hulbert, five days before publication: “To | Hulbert | with love | O. B. [Old Burroughs] | August 27, 1933 | [—]”

Condition: The book is square and tight, minor edge wear (rubbing) and a light bump to the top rear corner of the board. The red lettering is bright and unfaded. Pages clean and without any marks. With a bright dust jacket with a hint of toning and fading to the spine, light chipping and short tears at fold edges; a couple of small interior holes to front flap expertly mended, but an excellent example of a very scarce orginal dust jacket. Overall near fine.

This is the first edition of the sixteenth Tarzan title with “First Edition” on the copyright page, published on September 1, 1933. Frontispiece and four illustrated plates by John Allen St. John inserted throughout. This is the first book to come from ERB, Inc. to have the copyright page clearly marked First Edition, reflecting the author’s growing recognition of the value of his books to collectors. The first four first edition titles published by ERB, Inc. did not state First Edition but are easily distinguished by their by their blue covers” (Zeuschner, Edgar Rice Burroughs: The Bibliography, 2016).

“Altough Danton Burroughs revealed that the print run was 5,000 copies, this title seems unexpectedly difficult to find in excellent condition” (Zeuschner, 2016).

A great association family copy in exceptional condition.
