Foster Wallace, David (1987) ‘The Broom of the System’, signed first edition association copy
David Foster Wallace (1987) ‘The Broom of the System’, US first edition, first printing, paperback original, published by Viking. Signed and inscribed by Wallace: “Ann – For Your Help – I thank you – My mother thanks you – [signature] 4/3/87”. This is most likely an association copy from Wallace to one of the copyeditors at Viking. This is indicated by the level of detached warmth of the inscription, as well as the reference to his mother which was an English Professor and who would have appreciated David getting corrected on his grammar and spelling.
Condition: fine. Spine unbroken. Toning to paper commensurate with age, otherwise a fine and unread copy.
‘The Broom of the System’ is DFW’s debut novel which was published simultaneously in hardback and paperback format. However, the few hundred hardback copies were destined for libraries and hence bear the usual library stamps. Even then they fetch several thousand on the market with a hefty premium when signed. This copy here is by far the best paperback copy on the market in terms of inscription/ association and condition and represents is in our opinion better value than an ex library hardback which would cost double.
This debut novel resulted from David’s thesis at Amherst College. Although David himself had later been quite critical of this work, it was at the time received to wide acclaim as innovative, intelligent and breaking with the minimalist style which was then en vogue. The novel explores Wittgenstein’s philosophy of language whilst adding lots of humour. It prepared Wallace’s masterpiece ‘Infinite Jest’ making Wallace the most important voice of his generation. A writer which will be studied for generations to come.
