le Carré, John (1990) ‘The Russia House’, US signed and inscribed first edition
John le Carré (1990) ‘The Russia House’, US first edition, first printing, published by Knopf. Signed and inscribed with a lengthy inscription: “and for Michael Newman who travels with a book-stand, and is, I think, an even older friend than Bob [refers to Bob Gotlieb, le Carré’ editor to whom the book has beed dedicated] – with all fond wishes, & thanks for the good spirits & wise counsel – David, alias John le Carré, 15 April 90”.
Provenance: this is one of four signed first editions signed for Michael Newman which we have recently aquired in the south-west of England. As the inscription in the ‘Russia House’ copy reveals Michael Newman has been le Carré’s long friend, neighbour and occasional councilor on his work in progress. A wonderful association. Signed copies are exceptionall scarce and desired, and most ‘signed’ copies are either provided by means of a laid in signature or with questionable provenance at best. Especiall the ‘flat signed’ copies deserve ‘flat refusal’. We have never seen a nicer inscription.
Condition: a near fine copy with a bear minimum of shelf wear. A nice cloth and better quality production than the UK first edition which is the typical cheap Hodder cardboard.
‘The Russia House’ has been adapted as a film in 1990 starring Sean Connery and Michelle Pfeiffer.
