Lindley, John (1828) ‘The Pomological Magazine: or Figures and Descriptions of the most Important Varieties of Fruit Cultivated in Great Britain’ Vol I
John Lindley (1828) ‘The Pomological Magazine; or, Figures and Descriptions of the most Important Varieties of Fruit Cultivated in Great Britain‘, published by James Ridgway, Volumes I (of 3). Complete with all Hand-Coloured Engraved Plates drawn by Augusta Innes Withers (née Baker) (1793- 1877).
Condition: contemporary quarter leather binding with marbled sides. The spine has been renewed. Internally clean with usual ghosting on pages opposite the coloured plates. All plates in fantastic condition and we have imaged a selection.
The three magazine volumes were later re-issued as Pomologia Britannica (1841). This is the true first edition of the first volume. Vulume II and III were published in 1829 and 1830 respectively. Hard to find with all plates present as many magazines have been destroyed by collectors excising the plates for framing. The artist Mrs Withers was at te time Flower Painter in ordinary to Queen Victoria.
