McCarthy, Cormac (1975) ‘Child of God’, UK signed and inscribed first edition
Cormac McCarthy (1975) ‘Child of God‘, UK first edition, first printing, published by Chatto & Windus. Signed and inscribed by the author on the title page: “For James Cahill, All best wishes, Cormac McCarthy”.
Condition: a near fine copy without any previous owner’s inscriptions, no bookplates, no stamps. The book is square and tight with pages free of any marks, bright lettering, crown and foot of spine lightly pushed and upper corners touched. Dustjacket unclipped, colorful and bright, with a light toning to back panel, a nick to a corner and minimal wear and creasing to edges. An excellent copy, near fine in a near fine dustjacket.
Provenance: We can trace the ownership directly to the inscribee, an American bookdealer. We have also compared the matching handwriting to other examples signed in the early to mid 1990s.
Cormac McCarthy is a very private author who has granted just a handful of interviews to journalists. His principle is that it is better to write than to talk about writing. As a result genuine signed books are few and far between and provenance is key. We recommend that ‘flat signed’ copies should be avoided by the collector as signed material is rare and many forgers cannot resist the temptation of ‘enhancing a book’s monetary value’. Whilst a ‘flat signed’ copy might be genuine, in our opinion the risk of acquiring a forgery is too great.
‘Child of God’ is McCarthy’s third novel. We have seen only three incribed copies on the market in the past 15 years.
