Elric of Menlibonè is an antihero of the sword and sorcery fantasy genre, who first appeared in 1961 in a novella called The Dreaming City (Science Fantasy no. 46, June 1961). Over the decades many more stories followed. It has had a huge influence on fantasy, in particular with a fresh take on the genre with dark themes and void of certain clichés and conventions (over)used by fantasy writers following Tolkien’s rather colossal footsteps. It is only a question of time before Elric will also see film and TV adaptations.
