John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1954, 55) ‘The Lord of the Rings‘, UK first editions (2/2/1), published by George Allen & Unwin. Beautifully rebound in full white goatskin leather, housed in a sturdy slipcase lined with suede to ensure safe sliding in and out. The books have been re-bound by Richard Tong, a prize winning binder and publisher from Shropshire, in finest full white goatskin leather which has been supplied by Harmatan and Oakridge, widely regarded as the finest book leather suppliers in Europe. the design is breathtaking with no expenses spared. A set to be cherished for a lifetime and generations to come.

Book and Production details:

  • Three original volumes with their original foldout maps at the back
  • The Fellowship of the Ring is a first edition, second impression published in December 1954, the same year as the first print was published in July 1954
  • The Two Towers is a first edition, second impression published in 1955
  • The Return of the King is a first edition and first impression published in 1955
  • Re-bound in finest white goatskin leather supplied by Harmatan and Oakridge
  • The three front panels are graced by Tolkien’s own design, i.e. The Gates of Moria on The Fellowship of the Ring; Elvish Runes on The Two Towers; Tree of Gondor on The Return of the King. The artwork is stamped and gilded
  • The rear panels show Tolkien’s anagram stamped and gilded in gold.
  • All three page block edges have been gilded.
  • The endpapers are handmade and supplied by master marbler Freya Scott at Paperwilds (UK)
  • Leather joints make sure that no stress is placed on the binding.
  • Five raised bands on the spine per volume with the respective title and author’s name.
  • silk ribbon marker in all three volumes.
  • The volumes are housed in a black buckram slipcase lined with black sueded to ensure the sliding of in and out without rubbing the leather. Tolkien’s anagram in gold on one side.

Condition: internally clean without any previous owner’s scribbles, no bookplates, no stamps. Perhaps an occasional spot which only pronounces the originality of the volumes. The books present in fine condition.
