Tolkien, J.R.R. (1954) ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers’, UK uncorrected proof
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1954) ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers‘, UK uncorrected proof, published by George Allen and Unwin. One of proably 20-24 copies according to Hammond and Scull. Correct proof with the textual difference in the ‘One Ring Poem’ where shadow is inellegantly mentioned twice in the last two lines, instead of “in the darkness bind them” as in the final version of the poem. The contents page lists chapter I ‘The departure of oromir’ instead of ‘Boromir’. No map at the back since the final version of the map was not finished yet before the proof was issued.
Condition: a very good example with the paper label still present on the front cover. Price of ‘about 21 Shillings’ in hand to top right corner. One faint circular stain just above the paper label on the front cover, probably from a glass being placed there. Slant to the spine and two tiny rips to folds at the foot of spine as shown. Last leaves with faint spotting, otherwise internally clean. The proof has most likely been read although we cannot locate any corrections by hand. No previous owner’s names, bookplates, nor stamps.
A very rare proof of the best known and most loved fantasy epics of the 20th century. Gained further momentum with the film adaptation by Peter Jackson.
