Momo (1973) won Ende the prestigious German Youth Literature Award (Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis). It is, next to the Jim Knopf stories and The Neverending Story (1979) his best known novel with numerous adaptations. In the German-speaking world generations of children have enjoyed the story and also read it in schools. Genuinely signed books by Ende are scarce because the author lived in Rome and avoided the limelight.
