Edith Wharton (1920) ‘The Age of Innocence‘, US first edition, first printing, published by D. Appleton & Company. First printing as indicated by the ‘1’ in brackets on the last page as called for. Beautifully rebound in full red leather with five raised bands to the spine and the author, title and year stamped in gild. Marbled endpapers present the volume luxuriously.
Condition: presents in near fine condition. small closed tear on the title page and an erased name. Internally clean and without foxing.
The Age of Innocence won the 1921 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction making Wharton the first woman to do so. The story has been adapted many times for the stage, TV and film, perhaps most famously with the 1993 Martin Scorsese film starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Winona Ryder and Daniel Day-Lewis. The book is read in schools and studied at university level for English/ American literature degrees.
